¡Nicaragua, a lot to discover! León
The city of León is located 90 Km northwest of Managua. Along with Granada, it alternated being the capital of Nicaragua until 1852. You can observe its colonial heritage in many of its antique buildings and churches. The first thing you should visit in León is the Cathedral, considered to be the most important colonial building of Central America. Its walls are decorated with oil paintings and frescos of great artistic value and the altar is also worth seeing. Outside you will find six massive lions decorating the atrium and the fountain located in the center of the church square. Some of Nicaragua’s most prominent men are buried underneath its arches. Among them is “Rubén Darío”, the great Nicaraguan poet, who is buried next to the statue of San Pablo. Next, you can visit the “Rubén Darío Museum-Archive”, place where he lived during his childhood. Later, it became the residence of “Alfonso Cortés”, one of the greatest metaphysical poets in Latin America. Many original artifacts and documents can be seen there. The “Rectory of the National University”, nearby, is also worth seeing.
A visit to León should include a tour to its many churches. Among them, the most remarkable are “Subtiava”, “La Recolección”, “La Merced”, “San Franciso” and “El Calvario”. Other buildings of architectural and historical importance are “Palacio Episcopal”, the “Escuela San Ramón” (site of the first university in Nicaragua) and the “Teatro Municipal”. The main celebrations take place on September 24th (Las Mercedes Virgin) and December 7th (“La Purísima” or Immaculate Conception). During Holy Week León’s streets are decorated with colorful religious sawdust rugs. In January León celebrates a significant cultural festival.
On your way back to Managua, you should take a detour to see the ruins of “León Viejo”, just 30 Km southwards from León. This was the original site of León, abandoned in the 16th century due to volcanic activity. These ruins were found during the 1960 decade and are considered to be an important heritage from colonial times. Don’t miss them. 22 Km from León (going from Telica to Estelí) you will also find the “Hervideros de San Jacinto”. Telica Volcano heats up an underground river which shoots hot water and mud up through the hervideros’ holes.
