¡Nicaragua, a lot to discover!
It borders Honduras and is crossed by the Panamerican Highway. Chinandega department has 4,929 km² and a population of 405,000 inhabitants distributed in thirteen municipalities:
Cinco Pinos, Corinto, Chinandega (department head), Chichigalpa, El Realejo, El Viejo, Posoltega, Puerto Morazan, San Francisco de Cuajiniquilapa, San Pedro del North, North St. Thomas, Somotillo and Villanueva.
In this department Nicaragua’s highest volcano, the San Cristóbal (1,745 m), and two other volcanoes, elChonco and Casitas is located. It has a population of 133.361 inhabitants (estimated on 30 June 2012 according to the National Census of Population and Housing, INIDE, 2005) with a population density of 89 inhabitants / km² Urban population represents the majority with 62% and rural area focuses only 38%.
The most important economic activity is agriculture, mainly the cultivation of sugar cane, being located here two of the country’s largest sugar mills: Ingenio San Antonio (ISA) and Ingenio Monte Rosa.
